As I mentioned on Friday, I spent my Memorial Day Saturday at the Etnies Skatepark in Lake Forest, California for the Sheckler Foundation's Skate for a Cause event. Some of the world's top skaters were in attendance, putting on a trick contest for charity. Tech Deck was there as well, running a booth with games, prizes, and most important of all, a fingerboarding course.
Pretty sweet setup, and it was a beautiful day in Southern California. I got to talk Tech Deck and fingerboarding with people all day, and just about everyone had a skateboard in their hand (or below their feet) too. Not a bad way to spend your Saturday.
You've probably noticed that giant board at the front of the booth. Let's take a closer look.
If you were at the event, you could get these tickets by giving money to the charity. Put two in, and you got three boards from here.
Get ready to toss! For each Teck Deck you got through the larger holes, you'd get a Tech Deck fingerboard. Get it through the smaller hole, and you walked away with "Shecks" or "P-Rod" Plan B skateboard!
Towards the back of the booth, we had a full course for fingerboarding. Lots of people who won a Tech Deck in the carnival game went straight here to try it out.
If you're a veteran of fingerboarding culture, you probably recognize the guy pictured here: that's Denver Espinoza, winner of last year's Tech Deck Money Cup. He was showing off some serious skills at the Tech Deck course, and even got interviewed by Lug Nutzz television!
Before the skateboarding portion of the event started, Ryan Sheckler made an appearance in the dunk tank for charity.
This was the biggest crowd of the day (aside from the main skateboarding event), so I apologize for not having a picture of him after getting dunked. I can assure you, Sheckler went into the water over and over. He had a smile on his face the whole time though, and who could blame him? A few dunks in the tank meant some big donations for his foundation.
Once he dried off, Sheckler made his way over to the skateboard park with many other top pros. Here's the setup:
The compet.i.tion involved one session at a time within a zone, with the skaters trying to outdo each other on tricks. It was a blast to watch: it's one thing to see professional skateboarders on video, but to see them pull off these tricks live really shows you how talented they are. In the end, Greg Lutzka won Zone 1, Ryan Sheckler himself won Zone 2, and Sean Malto won Zone 3.

In all, I couldn't have asked for a better start to the long weekend. Lots of fingerboarding and skateboarding outdoors in beautiful weather, and for a great cause too!
